Hi, this is Deniz.
This is the second time I’ve started to write a blog. The first time was back then when I was trying to be an indie game developer. Feels like another life ago… Luckily, it didn't take long for me to discover where my heart actually belongs as a creative. A medium where a storyteller has the ultimate freedom: comic books.
For the past few years, I’ve been getting out first 1000 crappy pages out of me, learning the craft as I go, figuring things out in the hard way, getting gigs as a freelancer, screwed over as a freelancer, pencilled, inked, colored, lettered and publish one shots, comic book issues, graphic novels, covers, posters, illustrations.
Until now, it was mostly work-for-hire gigs, collaborating with writers, creating their stories. Recently, I decided I also have some stories I want to tell, so I started writing some of them. They say writing is not as easy as it looks, and boy, they were right! But things got better as I wrote. A few crappy outlines later, I finally have some solid scripts which are worth spoiling some good-quality blank paper.
The act of writing itself felt so good. I decided I needed an excuse to do it more frequently. Hence, this blog is created. Keeping a blog is more intimate and has more depth than generating brain-dead social media posts for some engagement, anyway. I named this blog PAGE COUNT because I think it is the most important thing when you draw or write books. You get better each time that number goes up. Each page trapped in you eats your brain inside out. You need to get them out fast.
In this space, I'll be posting periodical newsletters to inform you of what I’m up to. On CRAFT TALK, I’ll write about tricks, techniques, and insights about making comic books, which I’ve learned by making stupid mistakes. FAN TALK will be all about things I love: comics, movies, books, albums, and more. SKETCH BOARD won’t have a certain context. It will contain essays, short stories, meditations, and guest writers.
Feel free to subscribe, check in from time to time. Enjoy all the posts about things I love, make me excited, make me annoyed, make me confused. If you like my attitude, go buy some of my books so that I’ll be able to create more of them.
See you around…
